Peculiar Stars by Rebecca Yarros: This Is Not The Dragon Book

Rebecca Yarros has a new novel on 17 November. If you typed “Rebecca Yarros new book” into a search bar this month, you were probably hoping for the next Empyrean.

Here is the truth: this is not an Empyrean book. There are no dragons, no War College, no Xaden. It is a standalone contemporary romance about two people stranded on a deserted island.

The Reader’s Truth: “Buying a book for the author’s name and getting a different genre is the oldest disappointment in reading. Better to know before you preorder.”

What it actually is

Peculiar Stars is a standalone contemporary romance. Yarros herself calls it a “castaway romance,” according to Book Riot’s report of her announcement in April.

The premise, as it has been described:

  • A young woman is stranded on a deserted island by a cyclone.
  • The person stranded with her is a member of her fiancé’s family. Book Riot reports it as a cousin, and the number it quotes is 543 days.
  • Once they are rescued and back in their privileged world, the homecoming turns out to be more dangerous than the island. That last part is from The Hollywood Reporter‘s description.

It publishes on 17 November 2026, and preorders were already open in July.

Where it sits in her books

It is not book four.

The next Empyrean novel has no title and no release date. Yarros said in the spring that she had started writing it, and she has told interviewers she has planned five Empyrean books in total. That is all that has been confirmed.

What you may have seen on 29 September was Threshing Day, a collection of thirteen short stories set in the Empyrean world. It is a companion book, not the fourth novel. Yarros said it does not change the book four timeline.

We have the full Empyrean reading order here, including where Threshing Day goes.

Peculiar Stars is a different thing entirely. Yarros was writing contemporary romance long before dragons — her career goes back to 2014, and Variation, a contemporary romance, came out in November 2024.

The Apple TV news

The Hollywood Reporter reported on 22 July that Apple TV has acquired the rights to adapt Peculiar Stars.

What is confirmed:

  • Apple has the rights.
  • Yarros will executive produce through her production company, Full Measures Productions.

What is not:

  • No writer is attached. Apple was still looking for one.
  • No cast. No release date. No series order.

One thing worth keeping straight: this is Apple. The Fourth Wing adaptation is at Prime Video, with Michael B. Jordan’s company. Those are two different projects at two different studios, and the headlines often blur them.

What we do not know

We have not read it, so this is not a review.

We also have not seen the publisher’s own page. A library catalogue record lists Amazon Publishing as the publisher and gives a November 2026 date, and Yarros’s earlier contemporary books were published by Amazon’s Montlake imprint, so that fits. But we have not confirmed the imprint, and we are not going to print a page count off a pre-order record, because it can change.

When the publisher’s page is up, we will update this.

Should you preorder?

If you want contemporary Yarros: yes. This is exactly that, and it has a TV deal already.

If you want dragons: wait. Book four is being written and is not dated. Nothing about Peculiar Stars touches the Empyrean story.

If you have never read her: start with Fourth Wing (order here), or with this if you would rather skip the fantasy.

The short version

  • Peculiar Stars — 17 November 2026, standalone contemporary romance
  • Not an Empyrean book. No dragons
  • Premise: stranded on an island after a cyclone with a member of her fiancé’s family
  • Apple TV acquired the rights in July 2026; no writer attached yet
  • Empyrean book four: no title, no date
  • Publisher: a library record lists Amazon Publishing; not confirmed by us

Are you reading this for the romance or waiting for the dragons? I know which camp most of the comments are about to be.
